Elon Musk To Drive Tesla Model S Across America In Six Days

tesla-supercharger-stopThe Tesla Model S has defied even the wildest expectations, shooting Tesla Motors stock into the stratosphere and increasing the profile of Elon Musk exponentially. So now is the perfect time for Musk to embark on a great American road trip. Musk claims that during six-day road trip from Los Angeles to New York City, the Tesla Model S will spend just 9 hours charging.

Musk tweeted about the trip early this morning, with details having been finalized. The trip will no doubt showcase Tesla’s network of Supercharger stations, which have been slowly cropping up along America’s coast. But America’s heartland is devoid of Superchargers, so how Musk plans to spend just 9 hours recharging at Tesla-exclusive charging station has me scratching my head.

The 3,200 mile journey will require a minimum of 11 refills, even if Musk manages to wrangle 300 miles per-charge. Musk claims that they will spend just 1.5 hours a day recharging, the same amount of time they would spend at rest stops or tourist attractions.

Fair enough, but Tesla’s own Supercharge map shows wide swaths of the country remain uncovered. Am I missing something here? Probably. I know enough not to doubt Elon Musk when he says he is going to do something.

You could have clicked on the “Winter 2013″ tab right below the map to see the coverage before writing a negative article conclusion.

But that would be too much journalism, wouldn’t it?

And if he had, a interesting facet could have been added to
the story. It seems that just in time for Musk’s trek, charging stations will
be open on his route, but not other popular routes through more populated
states. It’s as though the stations are
being opened only to help with the publicity.

      • rebel_sal

Last time I checked i80 was a pretty popular highway and NY to SF/LA was a popular drive.

But sure, why not just make baseless claims, it’s so much more fun!

Not to start a fight, but rebel_sal’s response to my reply is an example of one reason for misunderstanding of news by people today.

I wrote “seems” and “as though.” rebel_sal seems to think I am stating things as though I know they are facts.

Except i80 goes through Sacramento and Salt Lake City. The route shown by the additional chargers starts on i15 to Vegas then to Denver on i70, where it looks to take i90 east from there, around the Great Lakes, I suppose i80 is required for some distance, but unless another station suddenly pops up in the middle of Pennsylvania (it does in 2014) you’d have to head south to Baltimore on i76, or just pop into Canada. I80 does not seem to be done till the 2015 tab.

How is the article negative? Also, where I come from, it is still technically summer, and unofficially fall. I know Christmas has been creeping up earlier and earlier, but the trip takes place next week, and the map is from Tesla’s own”Fall 2013″ projections.

    • grindz145

Even Fall 2013 includes a bunch more chargers that aren’t shown on the map in the article.

Only decades from ‘on the fly” inductive charging for electrics in a very progressive America! Totally eliminates refuelling.

“Musk tweeted about the trip early this morning, with details having been finalized.”

Given that Elon is at least a bit smarter than the average Joe I would suspect he has the charging stations being installed at the moment.

Perhaps they were finished up last night. And tested. And some spares put in place.

You know that after the crap he was served by that TV show and that NYT reporter he’s not likely to leave himself open to failure.

Instead of charging the batteries they will be changing them out. How were the batteries delivered?

    I say, Bravo!

I’m sure quite a few owners will be waiting at some of the stops.
