Africa, or: What did Both Toto and Honda do Best?

Honda Africa Adventure Tour

The bike you see above is the Honda Africa, and like the 1980s rock ballad from Toto, it rocked. The bike itself was a 2-cylinder adventure/touring bike that tackled cross-continental rally stages, backwoods mud-road races, and Monday-morning commutes with the kind of flexible aplomb that – in my experience, at least – you can only find in a Honda. BMWs are cute and all, but when you’re more concerned about making it home than you are about making it to Starbucks, it’s Honda. There’s only one problem: You can’t buy the Africa in the US.

Not yet, anyway.

According to industry insiders, however, Honda is looking to bring the Africa Twin model back to its current line-up. The proposed “new Africa” would slot in above Honda’s automatic CTX700 and CB500 models, and – assuming the rumors of an 800 cc variant are true – the “I live on my bike!” guys are absolutely going to rob your house to be able to pay for one. You’ve been warned.

As for Toto, here’s an awesome cover band absolutely KILLING IT at karaoke night (or something). You can sing along with the lyrics, below. Enjoy!

Songwriters: STONE

I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She’s coming in 12:30 flight
The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way,
Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say, Hurry boy, It’s waiting there for you

CHORUS:
It’s gonna take a lot to take me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never have

The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what’s right
As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
I seek to cure what’s deep inside, frightened of this thing that I’ve become

CHORUS

(Instrumental break)

Hurry boy, she’s waiting there for you

It’s gonna take a lot to take me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa, I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa, I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never have
