Video: “Big Daddy” Don Garlits Launches A 1,500 kW Electric Dragster

It has been a while since we had any electric drag racing news of note, so we were happy to stumble across this video of a drag racing legend launching a massively powerful electric dragster. The name “Big Daddy” Don Garlits might not mean much to you, but in the drag racing world he is royalty…and his support of EV dragsters is kind of a big deal.

Don Garlits came of age during the golden age of American drag racing. Big Daddy has 17 World Champion titles to his name, as well as being heralded by many magazines as one of drag racing’s elite. Not even age and a social security check can slow big daddy down though.

Piloting a naked EV dragster with 1,500 kW of power (around 2,000 horsepower), Don Garlits was unwilling to take the electric race car up to full speed without all of the on-board safety equipment. Even so, he managed to turn some impressive times in this dragster, built by High Tech Systems LLC. With a 60-ft time in the 1.12 to 1.14 second range, while he managed to hit the 330 foot-mark in just over 3-seconds. At the ⅛ mile mark, Garlits had hit 95 mph, which puts this dragster in very respectable territory.

Unfortunately, for some reason, you’ll have to go to YouTube itself to watch the video, but trust us, it is well worth it. While Garlits hasn’t outright endorced electric drag racers, the fact that he is even sitting in one lends it a lot of track cred. If electric racing can convince Big Daddy of its merits, then we think it is only a matter of time before EV dragsters gain wider acceptance, and eventually, popularity with the rest of the racing world.
