Video: Jay Leno Drives The Tesla Model S
Comedian, talk show host, and all-around gearhead Jay Leno loves automobiles as much as a man can, and his all-encompassing passion is really something to be admired. From American muscle to steam-powered trikes, if they built it, Leno probably has it in his garage/warehouse. Recently, Leno got a special visit from Tesla Motors, who let him burn rubber in one of their new Tesla Model S sedans.
Tesla’s Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen was on hand to explain the inner workings of the Model S, which Leno has already admitted to being a fan of. As usual, Leno spends most of the episode talking shop with von Holzhausen about what is new, what is cool, and what the Tesla Model S means for the future of transportation.
One of the more interesting aspects of the video is getting a chance to see Tesla’s touchscreen command center in action, working everything from the front-mounted trunk (or “frunk”) to opening the massive sunroof. You can even control the height of the suspension while driving. It’s a very cool setup, one I imagine will be copied by other automakers in the coming years.
Finally, 8 minutes into the video, Mr. Leno finally takes it on the road. While Leno is no stranger to alt-fuel cars (he owns a Chevy Volt, and racked up over 11,000 miles in a single year of ownership on a half-tank of gas) the Tesla Model S seems to genuinely enthuse the Tonight Show host. While Leno and von Holzhausen talk about Tesla’s Supercharger EV charging stations, it was more fun watching Leno quietly shred rubber in this all-electric sports sedan.
Leno also makes an awesome point, one I often make to my truck-driving friends. In short, the more people driving EVs or plug-in hybrids, the more gasoline leftover for pleasure-driving classic cars, big trucks, and the like. How can you disagree?
