One of my favorite EV conversion shops to follow has been EV West…mostly because they took a BMW, gutted it, and turned it into an electric race car. Their car competed, and performed well, in the annual Pikes Peak hillclimb, and while the race has been over for weeks, EV West JUST released this 12-minute video of electric performance car awesomesauce for our mutual enjoyment.
As no doubt many of you know, the BMW M3 is the performance version of the BMW 3-Series. It is a highly regarded car in many enthusiast circles, and so I love nothing more than to see the still-beating engine of an M3 yanked out and causually tossed aside to be replaced by an all-electric drivetrain.
Not that has hampered performance one bit. Just ask DIY rally driver Bill Caswell, who took the EV West BMW M3 EV for a street run. He came away impressed, and so did I when EV West posted an 11:58 on the Pikes Peak hill climb. That was good enough for 4th place in the EV class overall, and the top spot for a converted street car.
If you’re into electric race cars, you are going to love this video, as it is over 12 minutes of pure EV power. Sure, I sort of miss the roar of a well-tuned engine. But you don’t get smooth-as-butter acceleration with a big loud engine, nor do you get the consistent power delivery at extreme elevations like those found on Pikes Peak. In other words, for events like the Pikes Peak hillclimb, it is only a matter of time before EVs completely dominate the competition.
I can’t wait to see what EV West brings to the table next year. How about some American muscle next?
