I’ve grown accustomed corporate sponsorships masquerading as documentaries. It is easy enough for me to tune most of these glorified infomercials out, though an upcoming show on SPEEDTV may have to make me making an exception. “Toyota’s Road to Le Mans” focuses on the Japanese automaker’s return to 24 hour endurance racing with an all-new hybrid race car.
With the recent Le Mans test days proving that the hybrid race cars from Audi and Toyota having the power to run at the front of the pack, all eyes are on this “revolution” in endurance racing. SPEEDTV is promoting its new series with a trio of commercials focusing on the revolution, asking “What does a race car sound like?” Then a shot of the Toyota TS030 Hybrid flying down pit lane with nothing but the hum of electric motors to announce it. Cool stuff.
The series airs on June 15th at 10 PM EST, and I would be surprised if there weren’t plenty of Toyota commercials airing between segments. In fact, if you type “24 hours of le mans” into Google right now, the first ad result is Toyota’s official motorsports website. They’re really pushing this pretty hard, eh?
That said, for once the hype is real. Hybrid racing is already a fact of life in Formula 1, and if the Le Mans test days from earlier in the month are any indication, the Audi and Toyota hybrid racers stand to completely dominate the race. Along with Toyota’s recently-announced endeavors with an electric race car at the Nurburgring and Pikes Peak next month, it seems like the Japanese giant is getting back into motorsports for all the right reasons.
