The VW Nils is one of the high points of the IAA 2011 – but there was one issue unaddressed by concept art and initial press releases. The first images didn’t really give an impression of internal comfort. Auto Motor Und Sport conducted a practical test to see whether it would be cozy or claustrophobic.

Project Spotlight: Dirigo, the Homemade 99 MPG Car

Bill Buchholz has built one of the most unique looking experimental diesel powered cars on the road. A one-time contender for the $10 million dollar Automotive X Prize, Dirigo is made of fiberglass and wood, Western Red Cider to be exact, and has gotten up to 99 miles per gallon (mpg); 89 mpg and 92 mpg recorded in events and competitions throughout the United States.

Penn State Turns Waste-water into Cheap n’ Easy Hydrogen Fuel

Researchers at Penn State University claim to have developed a process which shows “that pure hydrogen gas can efficiently be produced from virtually limitless supplies of seawater and river water and biodegradable organic matter” … which is, of course, a fancy way of saying “poopy water”.

A Swarm of Electric Scooters Invades Japan’s Airwaves

Japan is extraordinarily determined to ensure acceptance of electric vehicles. Its most recent push came in the form of a team-up between Terra Motors and the JACLA (JApan Car Life Assist) aimed at driver’s ed students nationwide. 300 driving schools throughout the country received large plasma displays solely for the purpose of running ads for electric scooters.
