The Ajrio, an Aussie Bike that is Grown, Not Built

Bamboo is light, strong, and renewable due to the plants fast rate of growth. In other words, bamboo is perfect to make bicycles out of. Enter what might the coolest designed bike on the streets of Australia. The bike is from Australian student and designer Alexander Vittouri and called The Ajiro.

The Ajiro is molded by an inner skeleton frame via tension so that vibrations from the growth process of the bamboo will not have to be corrected by energy using methods like heat or steam. Additionally, The Ajiro has a canopy to keep you dry and an under the seat storage area—all made from woven bamboo.

The Ajiro takes advantage of the velobike design as described by the designer Alexander Vittouri:

The velomobile concept provides a natural source of human power, bridging the gap between car and bicycle by providing on-board storage and canopy protection for the rider. Simplifying the package, the [Ajiro’s] rear wheels act as the steering mechanism, with the front wheel providing power input. This removes complexity of many recumbent vehicles reliant on derailleur systems. For stability at the low speeds proposed for urban use, most of the rider weight is positioned over the rear wheels.

Other than walking or riding an animal, this is as close to all natural road transportation that one can get. There are other bamboo vehicles out there; however none are as stylish as The Ajiro. No news on mass production plans or the cost of The Ajiro, though Vittouris envisions a farm where each bamboo frame can be slowly molded into shape. If you find yourself in Australia be on the lookout for the bike that is grown and not built.
