In many cities, biking is regaining a popularity it has not enjoyed since the 1890’s, and many cities are building bike lanes to accommodate cyclists. But not everyone respects the bike lanes, so the Mayor of Vilnius, Lithuania went along for a ride in an armored vehicle to crush an offending Mercedes.
Arturas Zuokas, the Mayor of Vilnius, set up the car-crushing and posted the video to his Facebook page, where it quickly went viral. Zuokas is apparently a big fan of cycling and often bikes to work himself, and along with the video he posted this message to Facebook;
“I’ve had enough of these drivers parking their luxury cars on bike lanes and pedestrian crossings!”
He then rode along as an armored personnel carrier as it crushed a Mercedes parked in a bike lane quite convincingly. It was all a set up of course, but a poignant message none the less. I’ve seen many instances of drivers not respecting bike lanes…and cyclists need to follow the rules of the roads as well. But who hasn’t seen some jerk with a high-priced car parked like they own the place?
Biking has a long of strong proponents like Arturuas, and for good reason. Some studies suggesting that riding your bike may actually be faster than driving, and that bike lane construction creates more jobs per dollar spent than highway construction. So not only is biking better for your health and the environment, but it is better for taxpayers too…but not so good for people who like to park their cars, wherever. The message it seems to me is universal; rich people, don’t park like douchebags.
