It’s no secret that Toyota is planning to add production versions of its Prius c subcompact and Prius v micro van concepts to its growing Prius sub-brand. The latest news out of Toyota, though, suggests that a new (previously unseen) 2-door coupe may emerge hot on the heels of those 2 new Prii as early as 2014.
UK site AutoExpress is reporting that this new coupe could be a more sporting offering, featuring a rear-wheel drive and an available manual transmission, sourced from the existing Lexus GS Hybrid platform … which is more than a bit odd, considering that Toyota is already producing the rear-wheel drive FT-86 (nee Celica) sports coupe and the (supposedly) sporty CT200h platform, both of which would (arguably) be able to provide a more agile, lighter, and certainly less-expensive platform on which to build a plug-in sportster.
Assuming AutoExpress’ source is solid – expect more news to trickle out of Toyota as we approach next year’s Tokyo Auto Show.
AutoExpress has a number of renderings speculating on some of the design directions Toyota could go with their new Prius coupe (which look better than mine) over at their UK site. CLICK HERE to check those out.
