The new EPA ratings for electric vehicles netted the Nissan Leaf a 99 MPGe, and the Tesla Roadster 119 MPGe. Their latest all-electric competitor, the Mitsubishi i, has been rated at an impressive 112 MPGe, with an estimated 98 miles of all-electric range.
The 112 MPGe rating is the combined rating as well; in the city the Mitsubishi i can achieve 126 MPGe, while on the highway it is rated at 99 MPGe. The EPA has also given the i a “real world” rating of 62 miles, and a maximum range of 98 miles, putting it in the same playing field as the Nissan Leaf (which has a 73 mile “real world” range according to the EPA.)
Mitsubishi has been facing some tough times, and recently decided to end production of its four most popular car models in the U.S. in the coming years. It would appear that Mitsubishi is remaking itself into an all-electric and hybrid carmaker, with the i (also known as the i-MiEV) leading the charge. It is a funky looking vehicle to be sure, and it’s a little late to the EV party, meaning it risks being lost in the crowd as more and more EV’s hit the market.
But the 112 MPGe rating should help it get attention, as well as the MSRP of just
$29,990 $27,990…which puts it at about $20,490 after the $7,500 Federal Tax Credit is applied. This is the price range that more electric cars need to be chasing, as instead of competing with premium sedans, the price of the Mitsubishi i puts it in fancy compact and subcompact car range, thanks to the tax credit. Sure, the range is still limited, but it should be able to serve the needs of most, if not all, commuters.
Too bad it looks, well, how it looks. But if people could get over the awkward looks of the first-generation Prius, I’m pretty sure the Mitsubishi i will win over more than a few fans with its funky styling.
