For a few years, you could order a Jeep Liberty with a 2.5L diesel. It was awesome! Take highway mountain passes at 70, with 3 >250lb guys and a bunch of gear at 70, with no shifting out of overdrive.. Apparently, it sold out each year they offered it, but they decided there wasn’t enough demand…
We cannot buy one in the United States. Screwed again by an American car company.
I never understood the criteria these car companies use to decide which model will be available in which country. Some of it doesn’t make sense.
CAFE standards require Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) with no more than 15 ppm.
This requirement raises fuel costs up to $0.25 per gallon along with some technical issues relating to seals and vehicle fuel systems.
Europe went from 50 ppm down to 10 ppm in 2009. The US should see more diesels going forward.
MSO,
This CAFE vs. European Emission/Fuel standard info is not common knowledge. Are you in the business?
This article did not mention the diesel engine is from Daimler. Happy to see they are talking again. We run Grand Cherokee diesels.
Hmmm which would be easier, paying to import one of these or moving to another country where you can buy US made diesel vehicles?
