Kia Unveils Gorgeous New Optima, Hybrid Coming in 2011

Kia is having a stellar year, and with the new products in their pipeline it’s starting to look all nice and rosey over in the glow of their campfire. At the New York Auto Show today, among other high profile unveils including a great looking new Sportage, Kia took the wraps off its brand new Optima sedan… and spilled the beans that a hybrid version of it will be introduced in 2011.

But even without more details on the Optima Hybrid yet (Kia said that would be coming “at another auto show”) the two models detailed at the New York Auto show are impressive in their own right. Besides being drop dead gorgeous, the base model will have a 200 horsepower 2.4 liter GDI engine and return an estimated 35 mpg highway/24 mpg city. For a non-hybrid, mid-sized sedan with 200 HP, that’s pretty good, but drop the available 2.0 liter turbocharged 274 HP engine in there and, even with the greatly increased performance, Kia says the mileage drops by “just a smidge.”

With those figures, I can’t wait to see how many miles per gallon they can squeeze out of their Optima Hybrid.

Considering all the creativity and excitement coming from Kia recently, I dare say the company has essentially come from nowhere to become the design innovator to match. Give it a few years and I think we’ll see Kia as one of the biggest selling car makers in the world.

No pics or stats on the Optima Hybrid yet, but in the meantime check out the gallery below.
