Detroit Auto Show 2010: The 24 Best Green Cars

EV Innovations Wave

EV Innovations made a name for themselves by making battery-powered versions of the MINI Cooper. Their flagship model, the two-seater Wave, is a plug-in electric car that costs around $30,000 and has a 200 mile range.

Consumer Cars Tango 600

The Tango 600 runs for $85,000 and can hit 60 mph in just 4 seconds. It has one electric motor on each rear tire and can absorb a 200 mph crash. George Clooney is sold separately.

Harvey Coachworks BugE

The BugE has a 30 mile range, kinda. While the car has a top speed of 50 mph, the slower you drive then the further you’ll go: 20 mph increases the range to 40 miles. The best part, the energy it takes to run a dishwasher for a single load is enough to power this baby for 25 miles!

Honda CR-Z Hybrid

The CR-Z, a successor to Honda’s much-loved (and often stolen) CR-X, is a hybrid sports coupe based on Honda’s Insight platform. It is expected to have about 140 horsepower.

BYD Auto’s e6

Fortune magazine pick BYD Autos will showcase their e6, an all-electric 5-passenger vehicle that has a range of 250 miles.

BYD Auto’s F3DM

BYD’s F3DM is the world’s first mass-produced plug-in hybrid compact sedan. It went on sale to government agencies and corporations on December 15, 2008 in China.

  1. Very impressive lineup, Hopefully the US automakers will take notice and put themselves in the driver’s seat for increased auto sales with cars like these.

Very encouraging developments. I agree with LoveEarthAlways: Ford, Chrysler and Government Motors had better get going on hybrids and plug-in hybrids.

As for the vehicles on display in Detroit, several are out of the question for our family because they are too small and/or light.

I won’t risk the lives of my wife and child by sticking them in a flimsy vehicle that will be decimated in an accident with even a decent-sized car (let alone trucks and SUVs). Our 2009 Prius is about as small and light as we’re willing to go.

We’ll focus on green vehicles that aren’t death traps in an accident. Top two on our list are the forthcoming plug-in hybrid versions of the Ford Escape SUV and the Prius.

We’re hoping that both those vehicles will be assembled in the USA, too. The plug-in hybrid Escape will probably be made in Kansas City, Missouri, like the “regular” hybrid Escape. The plug-in hybrid Prius may be assembled at Toyota’s recently-built plant in Mississippi.

  5. Enlightening to see so many hybrid designs, and with San Diego set to receive charging stations for electric cars we continue to make progress on the auto front.
