Fisker Announces On-Sale Date for Karma: 3Q 2010

For a company that was founded just a little bit more than two years ago, Fisker has come a long way. Today, at the 2009 LA Auto Show, the company’s co-founder and CEO, Henrik Fisker, announced that the luxury Karma plug-in hybrid supercar will begin showing up at retail locations worldwide in the early part of third quarter 2010.

The company also recently announced the acquisition of a manufacturing facility in Delaware and has obtained a half billion dollars in US government loans to bring the next Fisker model to market—a more affordable car currently dubbed project Nina. Whatever production vehicle results from project Nina will be built in the Delaware facility and will go on sale in mid-2012. Fisker plans to produce and sell 100,000 project Nina-derivatives spread over three different models.

According to Fisker, the Karma on display at the LA Auto Show (see gallery below) is the final production model, so it appears that Fisker is ahead of the game in terms of production schedule. The Karma will have a base price of $87,900,and will come in a couple of different variations. The Karma Eco Sport has a leather interior and a generally sporty interior design feel. The Karma Eco Chic will have a complete animal-free interior with wood harvested locally from California wildfire debris.

If you’re in the financial situation that allows you to consider buying the Karma and you’re thinking you’ll just go down to the local retailer in later next year to pick one up, you’re in for some sad new. As Mr. Fisker remarked, “If you’ve been in early to order the car, you will get one next year, but if not you will not get a car next year—we are sold out completely for next year.”

By 201 Fisker expects to be able to ramp up production of the Karma to the full capacity of 15,000 units per year, at which point supply should be enough ease demand a bit.
