We would ban bicycles because they are quiet and do not produce emissions. Think we are in a foclear (fossil fuel+nuclear) minded oligarchy. Regards.

We've become so innured to noise pollution we don't notice it anymore, though, biologically speaking, our bodies do notice it, whether we acknowledge this or not.

There are plenty of studies out there that show that the noise of modern industrial society takes a real physiological and psychological toll on us.

It seems to me that we can come up with something better to address potential safety issues with quieter cars than enveloping ourselves in exactly the same noise pollution we have right now.

In fact, I know we can come up with something better -- sophisticated electronic warning systems for drivers, electronic radar devices for bikes, blind pedestrians, etc.

But I'm pessimistic that's the direction we'll go in.

What's next? Laws that require me to add a Harman Kardon-Lotus-like VROOOM to my EV?

P.S. -- If you're curious about what's potentially in store for EVs, check out this video on the UK Guardian's web site: The HALOsonic electric car sound system -- http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/video/2009/nov/16/halosonic-electric-car
