6. Butanol. With energy content similar to gasoline can blend at ratios much higher than ethanol. Genetic engineering and advances in synthetic biology could also lead to breakthroughs.
Advantage: Could use existing pipelines, existing infrastructure and be made from renewable biomass
Disadvantage: More toxic than ethanol (less than gasoline) so could contaminate water.
Example: Gas 2.0: Butanol could be a much better gas replacement than ethanol.

Nice summary of many technologies, thanks. I would disagree with the points on GMO agriculture. I think there are too many uncertainties at this point in this area. They have not been able to show they can reliably increase food yields, despite the claims. And it is still an area where health and safety has not been adequately researched.
