Colorado Residents Get $42,000 Rebate On Tesla Roadster

Tesla has not always had an easy time breaking new ground in the electric roadster market. There have been plenty of hiccups along the way, and it doesn’t help that their first production vehicle costs well north of $100,000. That is, unless you live in Colorado.
The state best known for its snowy peak and undefeated football team (boooo Broncos) also offers a substantial tax break on all hybrid and electric vehicles. For the Tesla Roadster, that amounts to an amazing $42,000 off of the $109,000 car.

This news comes on the heels of Tesla’s announcement that they will be opening a showroom in Colorado as well. Coincidence? The tax credit is based on a percentage difference for the premium price of an electric vehicle compared to its conventional cousin. The tax credit ranges from 50% of the difference in price for low-emitting vehicles to 85% for zero emissions vehicles like the Tesla (technically…). Since Tesla is electric-only, they compared it to the $47,000 Lotus Elise which the Tesla is based on. That means until December 31st, residents of Colorado can get the Tesla for $67,000, still a hefty sum but almost a 40% discount at the end of the day.
The tax break is available on other hybrids too. The Ford Escape, for example, is discounted by about $3,900, the Prius around $3,100, while the Lexus LS600h is discounted $20,392 from its $106,000 MSRP. So if you’ve been considering moving to Colorado and hate paying for gas, now is as good a time as any (as long as its before 2010). There is a long list explaining the process and available tax credits for popular cars so make sure you check that out too.
