You say "While coal produces a little over a quarter of the world’s energy, it is responsible for nearly 40 percent of greenhouse gas emissions.”

How can this be if 70% of greenhouse gas is actually water vapor?

I for one am tired of the same old uninformed, misleading, hysterical, anti-fossil fuel arguements.

Joanna,

just wanted to add this, as an example of the sort of money being put into this research - not so much really. If spending this much on researching reducing coal CO2 helps us get a bill that truly lowers CO2 bigtime (by funding renewable adoption),then it's worth it.

I think its a really Hobson's choice, actually. Coal is horribly toxic locally, depressing mental functioning and causing asthma and disease.

Climate Change will do even worse if we don't change because it could truly end human civilization. We could be back to the stone age in 500 years with truly massive ecosystem collapses. It is a betrayal of at least 10,000 years of civilization.

While 60% of our US states COULD get 100% of their energy in-state from renewables,

http://cleantechnica.com/2009/10/17/60-of-us-states-could-supply-100-percent-of-their-own-power-from-renewable-energy-new-rules-study/

(and some almost can now: Maine is at 55% renewable, Iowa 15% from Wind)but there are states that fear they will be harmed by legislation, making progress impossible in congress.

So we should STILL make a serious attempt to figure out reducing at least the CO2 from coal for 2 reasons:

1. We can THEN get votes for the climate bill that will get us to renewable power (its a small price to pay).

2. We can always sell the tech to China (recouping our investment).

"toxic waste ash" that why think coal is dirty. CO2 is nothing compare to waste ash. burn coal is like burning unsorted trash but we handle the waste much better because we put trash ash in a land fill. with coal ash we build dams with it.
