That&#039;s not a stupid question at all.  You generate H2 either by reforming natural gas or some other fossil fuel, or by electrolysis of water using electricity.  The former is barely more efficient than just burning the fossil fuel in a conventional engine, and the latter is far less efficient than using the electricity to recharge batteries.</description>
