Lexus to Launch Compact Hybrid in 2010

Japanese luxury car-maker Lexus has announced plans to launch a five-door compact hybrid hatchback. The new model looks set to be a major competitor to the BMW 1-Series and Audi A3 in the hot-hatch segment.

The new model will be showcased in September at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show and is due to go on sale in the UK by autumn 2010.

Lexus have not yet revealed a name for the new addition to its line-up, but have confirmed that it’ll be a gas-electric hybrid-only model featuring the same 2.4-litre 187bhp four-cylinder engine seen in the US-market-only HS 250h.

In recent years, the Lexus brand has become a byword for reliability and excellent standards of service, so it’ll be interesting to see whether they can emulate this success at the lower end of the market - and introduce some much needed eco-cred in the process.

  5. All Electric doesn’t cut it if you have to haul a load, either in the vehicle or in a trailer. It is necessary to open your mind beyond your personal desires and accept that not all of reality fits your particular desires.

  6. 99% of people do not haul loads or hook up trailers. They use their cars to get to work and back or go out to the shops.
