Lies and more lies. He mentioned that the maintainance of the EV1 was enormous. WHAT? and that people didn't want to buy them....WHAT? the people who leased the EV1 begged GM to sell the cars to them. The remaining one or two EV1s by agreement cannot even be charged and driven for fear that GM will look really bad (which they do). I actually have a friend who owns an electric Rav4 that can do at least 80 miles on a charge. I've driven it! Wonderful car. He drives it every day to work and back. No gas.

Sorry, but I'm afraid it wasn't that expensive then, and it would be dirt cheap now.

Take Lutz's own words, for example. He says that they built about 1,000 of the EV 1's, and that it "probably" cost around 100 grand each to build them. That's on par with any regular car in the testing phase. Furthermore, let's just look at the batteries. The first EV 1's had plain lead-acid cells just like in your car. Take 24 of them at about $120 each and you have a whopping $2880. Not affordable, my aunt Fanny.

It is blindingly obvious that had GM put an entire factory into building them, EV 1's would be just as affordable as anything else. They just didn't want to build something that would be so long-lasting and maintenance-free (this fact is borne out by mechanics who serviced the EV 1's at dealerships, who say the only things the cars ever needed were windshield washer fluid and tire rotations). It would affect short-to-medium-term profits too much, and besides, SUV's are huge profit generators (almost as cheap to build as a car, but can be sold for 2-5x as much).

@Constantin

The battery pack in the EV 1 was not affordable.

Instead of demonizing oil companies and the very companies that are now bringing efficient cars to market, how about acknowledging the difficulty in doing it? If it were easy, we would all be driving these cars already.
