SSC to Launch World’s Most Powerful Electric Car in 2009

Shelby SuperCars (SSC), the company behind the world’s fastest production car, has announced plans to launch an electric supercar that is four times as powerful as the Tesla Roadster later this year.

The Ultimate Aero EV will feature the firms proprietary All-Electric Scalable Powertrain, the AESP, containing twin electric motors capable of an incredible 1,000 HP (735 Kw) and 800 lb-ft (1083.42 NM) of torque. According to SSC, this should enable acceleration from 0-60 mph in a breathtaking 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 208 mph.

The car will boast a range of 150-200 miles on a single charge. Moreover, SSC’s Green division has trademarked an on-board charging system called “Charge on the Run,” which enables a 10 minute full battery recharge on a 220V service.

A new green division, known as SSC Green, Inc., will offer packaged solutions of the AESP for a range of applications, including 200 horsepower economy and midsize cars, 500 horsepower light trucks and SUVs, and up to 1,200 horsepower delivery trucks, heavy-duty equipment, buses and military vehicles.

Shelby expects to roll out its first full-scale, pre-production Ultimate Aero EV in the second quarter of 2009, with full commercial availability anticipated as early as the fourth quarter of 2009.

  1. The latest revision says “onboard charging system allows for full battery recharges in as little as 10 minutes”. Charging an electric 10 min is possible, but you would require specialized equipment. Consider this:

“The TerraVolt™ fast-charging energy storage system, including proprietary battery modules, battery management and energy optimization systems, is among the most innovative features of the HFC35. Designed and integrated right into Proterra’s composite body floor system, the TerraVolt™ system can be recharged by either using a Proterra rapid charge station for only minutes at route layovers, by plugging in overnight, or during operation from any form of APU. TerraVolt™ also has the ability to solely power a full battery-electric transit bus. This unique energy storage system is good for 10,000 total discharge cycles (estimated to last the life of the bus). Vehicle operators can realize up to $350,000 savings in total fuel expense savings over the 12-year life of the bus as compared to a conventional diesel bus. The all-composite vehicle body is 34′ 9″ in length and seats 37 passengers. ”

They are using Altairnano bats btw.

Also, anyone interested in investing in SSC can do so via United EcoEnergy (UEEC) which is purchasing up to 35% stake in SSC.

  2. finally some real innovation for me to sink my teeth into

  3. Not only would you need HUNDREDS of amps coming through a standard wall outlet in order to charge that a battery which claims 200 miles on a charge, but you would also need a copper cable the thickness of a tree so it wouldn’t explode instantly. This 10 minute charge claim is a complete lie.

Not only that, but an electric car accelerating to 200mph and 0-60 in 2.5 seconds would require a transmission made of wishes and magic. Another lie.

This car breaks so many laws of physics it’s astounding.

  4. The big part that everyone seems to be missing is the absurd combination of power and range. The tesla, which is according to the article, one fourth as powerful, has a range of 220 miles (roughly, and I don’t really believe it). This car will have a range of at least 150 miles. So it will need to have nearly 3 times the energy storage capacity. So this car would need at least 150Kwh batteries, which would weigh in at a little under 3000 lbs. This in addition to the weight of the electric motors, chassis, suspension etc. will make this car incredibly heavy and large.

Unless they have some rediculous energy storage devices.

  5. Dear Sirs!
    I bring to your attention.
The hybrid Advanced Gas-turbine Engine of a variable cycle for Supercar.
Power of engine 800 HP, 1200 HP – short time.
Torque on the start 1431 Nm.
Weight of engine 110 kg .
Size of engine: width 390 mm , height 390 mm , length 800 mm .
Air inlet – 4 pipes in diameter 98mm, the gas outlet – 4 pipes in diameter 106mm.
The car has no a box of speeds and coupling.
    Weight of supercar –1000 kg.
Transmission – electric, 125hp, 42000 RPM. Other power – direct transfer from the turbine.
Acceleration of the supercar up to 100km/h – 3sec, up to 400km/h –23sec.
Gas turbine engine for car – it is use of all kinds of the fuels, low emission of harmful substances, low consumption of the oil, the easy starting at negative temperatures, the less weight and sizes and etc.
At the offered engine the new scheme and simple the variable gas-dynamic cycle, which gives in addition the unique properties and capabilities for the engine and for the car.
In comparison with the usual gas-turbine engine the offered engine has in 2 times smaller nominal power and in 5 times smaller power of a transmission, the large air tapping behind the compressor and power take-off from a compressor turbine rotor without increase of the gases temperature and without decrease of the engine power.
I suggest to create the preliminary project of the Supercar with the Advanced Gas Turbine Engine.
Please, send your comments and question.
    Best Regards, Valentine. Engineer.
