BMW’s New Diesel 116d Gets 54 MPG

BMW has launched its greenest car yet! The 116d is 2.0-liter, four-cylinder diesel engine delivering 115hp and has a fuel consumption of 54 mpg. It is BMW’s most fuel-efficient and least polluting car yet, and only available in Europe.

Dammit!

The car is even greener than BMW’s current World Green Car of the Year contender, the BMW 335d BluePerformance. Capable of a top speed of 125 miles per hour, the car has CO2 emissions of 118 g/km, and will be available in March. Three and five-door models will be available.

BMW is hoping to bolster sales with its fuel-efficient models. Patrick McKenna, BMW’s marketing manager, told the Wall Street Journal that modern diesel engines are now considerably more efficient than people believe. “They are demonstrably better than they were 25 years ago,” he says.

How I long for a diesel-hybrid. Anyone?

  1. Why, OH WHY!, must we in the USA always be seemingly denied the importation of cars such as the BMW 116d. I can recall when VW would play games with the US market and continuously start and stop importing TDI’s for some unknown reason. If their purpose was to frustrate consumers by limiting supply, forcing them to pay sticker+ prices, well they’ve been successful. Where is VW’s diesel/electric hybrid we’ve been hearing about????

  2. Corn lobbyists keep sugar prices artificially high to make HFCS more economical.
Are the corn people lobbying politicians to keep efficient small diesels out of the U.S. so that they can sell more corn ethanol?

  3. California should be left out of the equation they shouldn’t force their standards on everyone else. If I want to a get clean diesel in TX I should be able to without having to worry about broke california.
