GM HAD an electric car...one which people loved, one which had potential and they buried it in order to push more SUVs and to keep more money in theirs and the oil industries pockets. The documentary film "Who Killed the Electric Car" for anyone who is unfamiliar. Very few American auto manufacturers are going to step up to the plate anytime soon and develop anything we have the potential for. The flat fact of the matter is that the cars they are capable of producing require less maintenance and less fuel which means less money coming back into their pockets. They are unmotivated to create anything of value to environment or the average American as it is simply not profitable for them in the long run, and thus far our government has been fine with that.

We don't need lithium batteries to power our electric cars. A company called FireFly Energy (Google 'em) is making a standard lead acid battery using a lead carbon foam instead of lead plates.

The US is a top recycler and producer of lead. This keeps the materials domestic so we're not simply trading one import (oil) for another (lithium).

I hope I can get my hands on some of these for my electric car.
