Mini-Hummer Gets 60mpg

A 45 year old mechanic from Dorset, England, always wanted a Hummer, but not the cost of maintenance and keeping it filled with gas.

So, Andy Saunders took a 1998 Suzuki Wagon, which he called an “old people carrier”, added custom steel panels and other parts to get that special Hummer look.

Now he drives a pint-sized version of the army’s Humvee personal troop transporter at a savings. Instead of 12mpg, he says the “credit crunch Hummer” gets 60mpg.

The complete transformation cost him nearly $7-thousand for parts, and some 300 hours of hard work.

Saunders has decided not to keep his customized car in favor of putting it up for auction in London this October.

How much would you pay for it? Saunders hopes it will fetch up to $30-thousand.

wow, it looks like a bottle of suntan lotion. Viewing this pic of a DIY Hummer doesn’t agitate me like seeing the others do. Instead, it makes me giggle.

  2. Nick Chambers Says:

He’s taller than the hummer. Sweet.

This has got to be one of the more ridiculous car mods I’ve ever seen. It looks more like a clown-car than a Hummer. If I was going to spend that much time and money I think I’d opt for an electric car conversion.

  4. Jeff McIntire-Strasburg Says:

You say “clown car” like it’s a bad thing… if they can pile all those clowns into them, they must be efficient.. right? ;-) Talk about carpooling potential!

  5. Clayton B. Cornell Says:

Ha, well, clowns do need to get around I guess…

The other day, one of the original Minis passed me on the highway. It’s amazing how effectively designed they are. Seeing one adapted to parody the stupidity of the Hummer is a wonderful prospect!

Now where in all of this does this thing look like a hummer? It looks like a golden miniature A-Team van.

  10. M. Webster Says:

Lame story. What else did he do? Were there mechanical mods?

  11. Bob Says:

How do they call that a hummer ? Looks like a go cart or wrecked scion. He spent 7000 and is hoping to get 30k for that ? Most every DIYr knows you almost never get your money back from weird projects.

    Looks NOTHING like a hummer!!!

  18. GrammarNazi Says:

    “$7-thousand”

How much time did that save you? You could have written “$7000″ if “seven thousand dollars” was too long.

It doesn’t even make sense. Seven-dollar thousand?

  19. Jason Says:

It’s a neat look, but if you think it looks like a hummer, please pass whatever you are smoking. Also, can the article actually include something about the mods? 60mpg from something made out of metal and not insanely aerodynamic is impressive.

  20. Joey Says:

It looks more like a mini Dodge Caravan than a Hummer.

  21. Auto Frankie Says:

let’s say he did get the hummer look. but it will still be an old people carrier. pity.

I prefer the kind that Bill got. Much more fun and easier on the environment.
